2018 Active Site
The Active Site is an event designed to expose undergraduates to current peer research and serves as a networking platform. Attendees will interact with undergrads from institutions across the Boston area, as well as with the keynote speaker, judges, and other professors in attendance. We will have a registration and poster competition where students can opt to be judged in order to win a travel award to the ASBMB national conference in April 2019. Lastly Dr. John Basl will be this year's Keynote speaker, discussing his work on the ethical challenges of engineering in living systems.
Keynote Speaker
Dr. Basl's work focuses primarily on issues of applied ethics, especially within biological research. He has focused on questions of the moral status of non-human research subjects, as well whether collectives such as biotic communities and ecosystems might be units of selection distinct from the individuals that compose them.
During his keynote presentation at the 2018 Active Site, Dr. Basl will speak for approximately 1 hour discussing both his latest research and the path he has taken to success. The organizers of The Active Site are excited to be hosting Dr. Basl in part because we think that exposure to the social science surrounding biochemical research are invaluable to young biochemists, yet often overlooked.
